We are a small scale flower farm conveniently located only 40-45 minutes from Dartmouth/Halifax or 20 minutes from Truro, just outside of Stewiacke, Nova Scotia in Fort Ellis. We grow over 100 varieties of annual and perennial cut flowers in a rainbow of colours which we offer for purchase primarily through our seasonal Bouquet Subscriptions, U-Pick, and farm stand Bouquet Bar.
In March of 2022, having made the decision to move ourselves and our three children back home to Nova Scotia to be close to family, we loaded a U-Haul with the necessities and our van with hundreds of baby seedlings I had started before we had even secured a property to grow on or a home to purchase. I babied those little seedlings across several provinces, even unloading them all into our hotel room on one particularly cold night spent in Northern New Brunswick. Despite several property purchases falling through, I continued to nurture and start even more seedlings at our tiny cottage rental in Cook's Brook, keeping the faith that our "forever home" would materialize for us.
Just when it seemed we would not be able to close on a property in time for the 2022 growing season, while I was in the midst of reaching out to local farmers to secure land for rent to grow my 600 dahlia tubers so as not to lose my valuable stock and was contemplating giving the thousands of seedlings I had nurtured along to local growers, in came the text from our realtor. There it was. The perfect property. A beautiful home. Land to grow on. Easily accessible and only minutes from amenities and Highway 102. Not yet on the market. Available for a quick close. We visited that day and submitted an offer that same night with the request that we be permitted access to the property prior to closing to begin prepping garden beds and planting seedlings. And that is just what we did. All of the pictures you see on this site are of flowers grown right here on our farm in 2022 - including those that made the long journey from Ontario, to a small rental cottage in Cook's Brook, before finally planting roots on our farm.
In 2023, we are expanding our growing area, offering our first bouquet subscriptions and opening our flower field to visitors for U-pick and special events. We are so thrilled to be a part of the community we live in and look forward to sharing our blooms with you!
Our farm was built by family.
From the first weekend that myself, my husband, my parents, and my brother shoveled and moved truck loads of soil by wheelbarrow to build our first garden beds, Branch + Blossom Flower Farm has been a team effort. Read below to learn a little bit more about us!
Hi! My name is Lorraine and I am the owner/farmer behind Branch + Blossom Flower Farm. Out in the gardens is my "happy place". Growing the most most beautiful blooms from the tiniest of seeds never ceases to fill me with a sense of wonder and amazement. Being outside with my hands in the dirt is like therapy for me. I am a seed shopping addict and when it comes to what flowers to grow I just gotta have them all! It brings me great joy to share our gardens and the gift of fresh blooms with others!
I was born and raised in Nova Scotia. My early childhood was spent in Advocate Harbour before my family moved to the Halifax area. After marrying my husband, we moved several times throughout Ontario and Nova Scotia for his military career. During those years I have been a photographer, a fitness trainer, a nutrition coach and more. Most importantly, I have been the mother of our 3 beautiful children.
While I have struggled with choosing the right career path for myself, growing flowers is finally what just feels right. I finally have career and business that indulges both my analytical and creative sides. A business that allows me to include and work side-by-side with the people I love most all season long. Working outdoors calms my anxiety and elevates my mood. The nostalgia of walking in the gardens floods back fond memories of driving by roadside fields of lupins in my childhood and the tall billowing stems of the gladiolus in my grandmother's gardens. Flowers feed the soul.
I am excited for our farm to be a destination where families, couples, and friends can come to leave their stress behind, enjoy the beauty, and connect with nature and each other.
I can't wait to meet you here!
Wyman (aka Papa) is our main man when it comes to any tractor-related work on the farm and our expert in all things construction related. Having worked with heavy machinery and in construction his whole life he is no stranger to hard work. If you pick a flower from a raised garden bed in our upick-he built it. He tills the field, moves the soil and plenty more. When he's working on the farm, you'll be sure to spot him in his striped work overalls. He often has his better half, Natalie (aka Nana) accompany him to the farm where she will be seen weeding, watering or whatever other farm task she can assist with.
One of the greatest joys of moving home is seeing my parents every week and I am so thankful that they choose to join me in building and maintaining the farm. Our entire family enjoys a hard day's work in the field followed by a giant family meal around the dining table.
Family is at the heart of our farm.
